JIMMY YEUNG
PRESENTATION
THE ARTIST
Jimmy Yeung is an artist originally from Hong Kong, where he lived and worked as a textile designer until 1979. In 1980, he moved to France and obtained his diploma in interior decoration from the Académie Charpentier in 1981. Although he only discovered ceramics in 1989, he quickly delved into it under the guidance of Michel Téqui in Villiers-sur-Marne. Since then, he has been creating animal sculptures in earthenware using the slab technique and mixed clays, fired in a biscuit kiln. His creations stand out for their clean shapes and elegant lines, mainly depicting birds, fish, and maquettes for monumental projects.
Alongside his work as a ceramic sculptor, Jimmy Yeung continues to pursue his passion for Chinese and contemporary painting, employing various techniques such as watercolor, pastel, and oil. His art revolves around diverse themes closely related to nature, fusing imagination with figurative elements. He skillfully crafts terracotta trees, playing with volume and life by meticulously adjusting modeled and sculpted plates.
Calligraphy is another one of his passions, and Jimmy has transcribed ancient Chinese poetry texts onto glazed terracotta.
One of his notable achievements includes a series of ceramics exploring the interplay of colors and architectural forms, forming the installation titled "Lonely City." This work showcases vibrant and bold tones, including red, blue, yellow, and metallic gray. Jimmy Yeung pays meticulous attention to details, meticulously working on maquettes to allow certain sculptures to house another airy and adjusted volume within. His original approach bestows a unique and captivating dimension to his artworks.
